People get onto the internet for everything these days.
Be it a place to have lunch, or the spelling of some difficult word, or the best option available on the market for Christmas shopping. Google or Bing is your friend.
Service providers have also caught up with their target audiences to make their businesses visible on search engines. They do this with the help of Search Engine Optimization.
Wedding photographers are no exception.
Wedding photography in itself is a service that requires a lot of promotion, and for good reason. You need to show your rizz to the potential clients before they decide to pick you for their special day. It’s a whole rizz-to-reason formula. This is where SEO comes in.
SEO for Photographers is a step-by-step process. You need to correctly dot the I’s and cross the T’s to rank high on Google. Believe us when we tell you that the higher you rank, the better and more potential leads you’ll have in your hands.
You’ll need to select the right keyword list for photographers, design a website, hang a portfolio, and do the content and backlinks.
In this guide, we’ll show you all our cards and tell you how you should be doing SEO for Photographers. IF you don’t want to do the legwork, Microters has an expert team waiting for your call. Reach us at (email or Phone) and book a meeting today.
Why is SEO for Wedding Photographers Important?
Let’s talk numbers… Around 2022 – 23, around 1300 people searched for “Wedding Photographers” online. This should give you an idea of the overall keyword list for wedding photographers.
Destination Weddings are on the rise these days. Naturally, couples want their candid moments to be represented on camera. The first thing they do is search for experienced photographers on the internet or Google Maps. This is where SEO can get you better exposure and potential clients.
Besides that, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is important for wedding photography websites for several reasons:
With Proper SEO You Have Potential for A Long List of Clients
You can maximize their online visibility by optimizing wedding photography websites for relevant keywords and phrases associated with their services. This puts the word out there for you. Do it right, and you’ll have organic leads coming in. SEO leads have more potential to turn into clients than paid marketing.
Local Search Engine Optimization Helps You Get the Word Out
Couples often look for wedding photographers near their residence or plan their wedding. Thanks to SEO tactics, engaged couples in your target location may find the website more readily when it ranks highly in local search results. You’ll have your hands full if you want to cover destination weddings.
Showcasing Your Portfolio Increases Your Brand Value
Good wedding photographers are a cut above the rest. They research the venue, take awesome event pictures, and put the best images on their website for the world to see. Gig-by-Gig, they develop their portfolio. All they need to do is to do SEO and increase their brand value.
Developing Credibility and Trust
People tend to view websites that rank well on search engine results pages as being more credible and trustworthy. People read blog posts from these websites, refer to them for ideas and planning, and also… tend to go for their services if others leave positive feedback.
You Don’t Have to Spend Much for the Reach You’re Getting
We can understand if people tend to use paid ads to secure photography clients. However, a Tip-Top website and proper branding through organic SEO have their own long-term benefits. You can attract readers, fellow photographers, and enthusiasts to your blog through tutorials and blog posts.
You might end up with your own fanbase with much less money spent on your portfolio! Couples might look you up for their photographs before next Christmas. As we said, it won’t cost you much.
SEO Improves User Experience
When we talk about SEO, people mistake it for getting good links “Only.” However, good SEO teams will also work on your website’s technical aspects.
Suppose you have a good team by your side. In that case, you’ll see improvements in website navigation and structure, among other things (website speed, anyone? CLP?).
Big Daddy Google values such improvements as these things make it easy (read: improves user experience) for the users to find whatever information they are searching.
With SEO, Your Website will be Mobile-Optimized for a Wider Audience
As of March 2024, more than 61% of internet users use Smartphones or other portable devices to search for their interests. AND… a good SEO knows it all too well.
That’s why a seasoned team will do its best to optimize your content for visibility on portable devices.
Getting Started with the Process: How Do You Do SEO for Wedding Photography?
Trust us; even big brands have taken their first steps toward SEO. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or someone who’s just starting out, you’ll have to start somewhere.
This is what our small (we’re kidding) guide will come to your aid. Let’s look at what you should be doing as part of the ongoing process.
Step-1: You Need a Set of Keywords to Get Started!
Before you set up shop online (AKA your website), you need to find out (and target) some words your audience searches for. Now, these keywords might not be as straightforward as “Best Wedding Photographers Near Me.” Yes, this CAN be a keyword.
Being more specific, you might want to rank for the locality you’re in. For example:
These keywords will help you rank locally in New Jersey or Colorado or Manhattan. We advise you to follow Keyword + City Name or Keyword + in City Name for furthering your list. You’re free to brainstorm your own ideas. Community based keywords will help as well. For example:
Christian Wedding Photographers
Sometimes, using related keywords helps as well. People often search for diverse topics that relate to photography at their wedding. For example, you’ll find your friend typing in “Wedding Photography Tips” or “Destination Wedding Photography Cost.”
Get a few SEOheads together, get all the keywords you want people to find you on. Target keywords that have a decent search volume. Although, we don’t advise beginners to target Keywords which have more than 50 SV per month.
Remember, you’d need to place keywords in your copy for Google to understand that you’re targeting that keyword and want to rank for it. Unless you actually type in the keyword in your copy, Google won’t spare a spot on it’s search results for you.
Google Keyword Planner, AHREFS, and SEMRUSH are a few of the popular tools we advise you use for your Keyword hunt.
If All these things are too tedious for you, just remember, Microters is here to help. Now that we’ve covered the basics of Keyword Research, let's proceed to the next step.
Step-2: Design the Website Itself
Yes, designing a website IS part of the process as well. This is where you get a brandable name as your domain, get a good hosting service, the perfect theme to represent what you do, and come up with a good UI. Don’t worry, a competent developer can take care of all these things.
That’s IF you want your website to be coded from scratch. But you’ll have to take the long road. It will take a lot of time to design and code such a website.
There’s an easy way out of the hassle. You’ll have to use a Content Management System (cue: WordPress). You’ll find several WordPress Themes that go well with photographers.
A Technical SEO can help you choose the ideal theme and help you fix the CLP of your website with proper instructions. You’ll need his/her help setting up the navigation system of the website as well.
More often than not, Wedding Photography websites are “Image Heavy.” This is where solid coordination between your developer and SEO team helps.
Valuable inputs from a Technical SEO team helps developers decrease the loading time of important pages (take homepage and service pages of the website as examples).
Oftentimes, people end up using WP Rocket, Hummingbird or other plugins to optimize their website for minimum loading speed.
While you are at it, make sure to do the little things right. We’re talking about setting up permalink parameters, setting up proper categories of your website, getting the search console for your website in order, setting up Google Analytics, Speed Optimization and Optimizing for Smartphone performance.
We’ve seen wedding photographers go for example.com/postname style permalinks. This is good. However, we suggest our clients something even better. In our experience, example.com/category/post-slug works better. This is called the “Silo” structure.
One benefit of this permalink-style is, links to specific posts push the rank of your website, the category your article is filed under AND the article itself.
As far as the categories go, we’re big believers of writing descriptions for each. The description should tell any user what to expect from the section of your website.
Remember, everything will be in vain if Google doesn’t value your efforts. This is why you need to create a website profile on Google Search Console. Just follow specific instructions and get your account set up, it’s easy. Once you’re inside the search console, you’d need helpful data to track your website’s performance.
Submitting a sitemap in the console helps. This allows SEOs to monitor internal and external links, broken links, different errors, and penalty statuses. We advise our clients to use Google XML sitemap to create and submit sitemaps for websites. It’s easy to find and tweak with.
Wouldn’t it be nice if users found your website categories on Google along with your homepage, service pages, and blog posts? Yes? That’s why writing precise meta descriptions for each category is something we keep at the top of our checklist.
We also recommend photographers to target one or two specific keywords for their homepage and service pages and come up with engaging meta titles and descriptions highlighting those keywords.
While we’re focusing on the technical aspects of the website, making it mobile-friendly is something you HAVE to do. In fact, we’re a huge believer in optimizing your website for smartphones and tablets along with desktop. As of 2024, 80% of the SEO-Friendly websites are mobile optimized.
Thankfully, most of the wordpress themes are mobile-friendly these days. They look slick on any and all sizes of screens. You won’t have to sweat a lot about it.
We admit, we talked a lot about technical SEO and website design. It might overwhelm people. But, the good news is, you CAN use certain plugins to make your job easier and faster when it comes to tweaking website speed, writing meta descriptions, and optimizing speed.
We recommend you use the following options:
Pro Tip: Take some time and configure the robot.txt file. This will help Google crawl and get to know important pages of your website.
Hey, if at any point all these things become too tedious for you, you can get in touch with us. We’ll be happy to take care of your website’s SEO while you capture important memories on film.
Step-3: Let’s Do the Content for Your Website Now
Let’s retrace our steps, shall we? We got our keyword research done and built a good website for ourselves. Now comes the tedious part. You need to write content for the keywords you researched.
This would be a good time to do a priority check. Organize your keywords based on the topic and publish good content that represents the topic. We don’t put a specific number as to how many articles any website should have. The number should be on the higher side though.
We believe you should have enough articles to show Google and your readers that you are a force to be reckoned with in Wedding Photography.
Put some time and effort into the research for each page on your website. The content should be thorough and should answer all the queries of your potential clients and readers.
Have you noticed we’re saying “Potential Clients” and “Readers” separately?
Well, that’s because your website will attract several types of people once it’s on Google. You’ll have to be prepared as well. An ideal Wedding photography website should have the following pages or sections:
Always pay attention to what you write on your website and what images you post in the articles.. If and when the website has enough articles, you’ll find some topics complement and some refute others.
Linking one article to another on your website helps Google understand the relevancy. This is what SEOs call Internal Linking. We don’t assign a number to internal links from one article. You can link to as many relevant pieces as you want. But we keep the minimum number at 2.
Also, you should cite other websites in your niche if and when needed. This helps Google understand that you’re not thinking only about yourself. In fact, you’re willing to give credit where it’s due. Like internal linking, outbound links don’t have a specific number. but we keep the ratio 2-to-1.
As far as content is concerned, images and videos are an important part of it as well. Our advice would be to properly optimize all the images on your website. Use alt tags, proper titles, captions, and descriptions to help google decipher the images and understand their contexts.
While you come up with all the articles, your team should represent each article by its type. In Google’s eyes, a how-to article should be just that. A “How to” article. Not a tutorial video. This is why you’ll need to mark each content with an appropriate schema.
Schema markup is easier done than said. It’s a set of html coding that represents content as it should be on google. Don’t worry, adding schema markup on your articles is not rocket science. Most SEO plugins come with in-built schema markup support as well.
Pro Tip: Pair the best images of yours with the blog posts. Also, publish 5 - 10 minutes of timelapse videos on YouTube showcasing your work. Even a photography tutorial will help. You’ll be able to bank on huge social media traffic with great visuals.
Step-4: Build Some Links
Right… we researched, designed a nifty website and got some well-written pieces on various topics. But here’s the catch! Not all the topics you wrote about are easy to rank.
Thousands of wedding photographers are writing on the same topic as you. That’s why it’s difficult to get to the first page of Google for some keywords. We call that “Keyword Difficulty.”
To make sure you rank for the difficult keywords, you’ll need similar and reputed websites in your industry to link to you. This is harder than it sounds. SEOs need to communicate with other bloggers in multiple stages before they agree to link to you.
This is a full-blown marketing campaign. Link building has several challenges and pitfalls for you to take care of. You’ll need to know which links to go for and which to avoid. We always advise our readers to go for the following types of backlinks from other websites:
Quality Guest Posts on a well-known website help a great deal. Let’s face it, you’ll need to get your content on Google.
Rather than getting links from 5 - 10 below average websites, we’d rather ask a reputed website with Good DR and UR (according to AHREFS) to link to a website. Websites with higher UR and DR typically comply better with Google’s do’s and don'ts in SEO.
Our clients prefer ABC backlinks as well. Back in the old days, link-building was simple.
Website A would link to Website B, and website B would link back to A. But Google decided to impose penalties on both the websites for doing so. This is when SEOs thought of using a third website in the middle to hide their footprint.
Now, website A links to Website C and Website B gives a link to Website A. Best SEO Agencies in the world turned it into an art. They have a network of great websites to link from or have partners who do guest posts for them. It’s all about how you leverage your resources.
A word of warning: While link swapping can scale your backlinks 3 - 7 times, doing it excessively can harm your website as well.
Wedding Photographers often aim to rank for a locale. This is where HARO backlinks help.
We see paparazzis covering highly publicized weddings AND photography competitions in different areas of the world. If you have achievements to show in your photography career… chances are, a reporter is looking for your scoop or your expert opinion.
Your SEO team needs to get in touch with reporters and help them write a piece on your achievements. Depending on who you get a hold of, you can get yourself published on reputed news outlets and magazines with a link to your website.
Digital PR goes perfectly with this niche as well. With this method, you can talk directly to your readers and potential clients through an interview, showcase your work at a photoshoot for a reputed magazine or submit press releases to a reputed website letting them know what you do.
If you have the budget for it, get one or two well-known public figures to speak for you on social media. Do a bit of meet-n-greet with them. Take some photos and ask them to review your skills in public.
A simple post on Facebook or LinkedIn or a 2-minute video about you and your services on Instagram will blow your popularity up.
Link building takes time, we understand. That’s why it's best if you hire an outreach team to do the job. And we are here to help. Our experienced outreach team takes care of everything nice and smoothly. This way, you won’t have to worry about communicating and collaborating with people.
Step-5: Local SEO Strategy for Photographers is a Crucial Step in the Process
People often search for affordable wedding photography agencies around the block. In our experience, they do it in two ways. Either they use normal search terms or what SEOs call “The Map Pack.”
Creating and optimizing Google My Business Profile is paramount if you want to rank for “Map Pack” on Google. The good news is that creating a GMB profile is free. You’ll need your business email for the job.
However, optimizing GMB profiles is the tricky part. People use several methods to get their businesses verified on Google. We’ve seen people do email verifications, verifying their businesses with a phone call, verifying what they do with a video submission, and even through information other people submit about you.
Each method has its own submission system. While registering for a business you represent, you’ll need to fill out as much information as you can. Getting quality reviews from your customers helps as well. Encourage them to leave a word or two in your favor.
Interacting with your customers allows you to unlock several statistics that represent them. With the set of stats, you’ll know your clientele better and will be able to make informed decisions.
GMB verification isn’t something you do solely for your customers. With this, you provide your business information to Google and the company safeguards your credentials to protect you from fraud. No one else will have their hands on your credentials. This way, people know it’s really you behind the business.
