SEO Services For Accountants Firm: Best 7 SEO Strategies to Get New Clients

As an accountant, you probably have a lot on your plate. Throughout the day, you have to crunch tons of numbers, fill in tons of forms, and review hundreds of documents. Where’s the time to get new clients?

Hiring people to get clients for you is definitely an option. But it’s a rather expensive one. This is where SEO enters. Your business can achieve its big-picture goals if you can get the SEO game going for you.

It’s not easy to present all the accountant merits engagingly to the busiest (read ‘most valuable’) clients. So, to make them pick you for their calculations and finances, you have to make sure to appear in front of them before others.

It’s possible to do so with proper SEO. How to do it? Well, it’s actually quite simple. SEO for accountants is basically a step-by-step process.

Writing the right content and placing it on a competent and optimized website is all it takes to become a success.

We made it sound super easy. Trust us, it’s not this simple.

You need correct keywords, backlinking, a Google Business Profile, and other things for this. Don’t be intimidated, though.

These may sound like tons of jargon but these are pretty easy to work out. And when you do, ranking on Google will be a reality for you.

Already feeling lost? We at Microters can help your accountant firm succeed. Our expert team is always waiting for your call. Just reach us through (contact info) and book a meeting.

Let’s take a look at how it’s done.

Why is SEO a Must for Accountant Firms?

Do you know how most people search for accountant firms nowadays? Each month, 3,500 people search for keywords like “accountant near me” on the internet, more than the ones who physically look for an accountant.

Thus, it’s better to have a strong online presence to flourish as an accountant.

In addition, there are tons of perks to appearing first in front of potential clients looking for you online. Let’s take a look at those benefits.

SEO Can Get You in The Picture

SEO is all about optimizing your website for search engines and appearing for the right keywords. If you do it right, your website can appear on the first page for queries on Google, Bing, or any other search engine.

This means that you are the first thing they see before other options whenever someone searches for an accountant or an accountant firm.

With Good SEO and a Great Website, People will Trust You!

Alexander Dyck, Adair Morse, and Luigi Zingales conducted a study last year. According to their findings, 41% of the companies misrepresent their financial reports. Such fraudulent activities can cost companies a fortune.

Frauds are also one reason people are scared to trust unknown firms with their finances. This is where SEO can shine. When people look for CFO, tax, or other accountant services online, they are likely to prefer the website that appears at the top.

The reason is simple: Google prioritizes content that actually helps and is legitimate. Thus, by being at the top of the search results, you can gain your potential customers' trust.

SEO Helps You Showcase Your Services and Excellence

A well-built website with a portfolio does wonders for accountants. SEO takes the portfolio, ranks it for specific keywords on search engines, and gets you leads. Positive feedback from past clients strengthens your claims about your services.

This presentation needs to be alluring and informative. However, what’s equally important is making the presentation appear before potential clients.

If you do proper SEO for accountant websites, you are sure to impress many potential clients while sitting at your desk.

SEO Gives You Best Possible Results at Lowest Possible Cost

There was a time when accountant firms used to get clients through networking, local advertising, and arranging seminars. As you can probably tell, this costs thousands of dollars each year.

Moreover, these methods were not cost and time-effective at all.

In contrast, SEO can generate more leads than ever with minimal cost.

If you do everything right, the cost of SEO will seem like nothing compared to the number of leads it generates.

If you think it’s something you don’t want to spend your valuable time on, then you can rely on us. We at Microters are always ready to assist you with all SEO issues.

Our Complete Guide on SEO for Accountants

All the big brands succeed because they utilize SEO for their benefit. If you too want to ensure the best SEO for your accountant firm, you can learn everything here.

Target the Right Keywords to be Represented in Your Website

In simple words, keywords are basically the terms and words your potential clients search for. A “Keyword” can be informative, a keyword can relate to a student’s credit score, it can be a service someone provides, a specific person, etc. Listing financial keywords is a hefty task.

However, there’s a silver lining. You don’t need all the financial or “Accountant-Related” keywords for your website. What you need to be is “Specific.”

For example, on average, 135,000 people search for “accountant” every month. Though the search volume is high and vague, you’ll find hundreds of websites competing to get ahead in this keyword. You don’t need to be the next.

Be Specific When Working with Phrases

As we said, you need something a bit more specific. Take a look at the keyword “accounting firm” instead. Though it got 18,100 searches on average, it’s more relevant to your business. Plus, it narrows down your target audience to a significant number.

We understand that “Specific” keywords have lower search volumes than broad ones. However, working with such keywords will give you a clearer picture of who you’re targeting, what sort of financial services he/she will need, and how you can help or educate the person.

Sometimes, people want somebody from their locale to solve their financial problems. Keywords like the following might be of help.

    Best accountants Calgary.
    Toronto forensic accountant.
    Affordable accountant for small businesses.

In our experience, targeting local keywords is a smart choice for accountant firms. Location specific keywords get 1,000 to 10,000 search volume every month on search engines like Google.

You can see the first keyword on our list for an example. It only has 20 searches per month (as shown in the image below) but the terms closely related to it have decent search volume.

    Best accountants Calgary

If we group them together and write informative article(s) on them, we’d be able to rank them on search engines.

Oftentimes, an existing set of keywords will give you interesting ideas. You’ll be able to find new keywords to work with. Take the third keyword on our list as an example.

    Affordable Accountant for Small Businesses

Affordable Accountant for Small Businesses has a decent difficulty but there’s a silver lining to it. It comes with a decent traffic potential. Also, “Small Business Accountant + City” is a new type of keyword idea that we got from the keyword itself.

There’s an interesting bit of information AHREFS gave us as well. Page created with this keyword needs links from 17 domains for it to rank. It’ll come handy when you’re planning

Where You Should Look For These Keywords?

These keywords are easier to work with than others. You need to brainstorm and do deep research. There are a few tricks to knowing what keywords are prevalent nowadays.

When you type a phrase, Google's search suggestions and the keywords enlisted in the “People also search” list provide valuable information on what keywords get the most clicks.

Microters looks into financial forums as well. There, people discuss financial issues with others and find solutions. Oftentimes, we find interesting phrases that have decent search volumes.

The next step is to instruct our writers to come up with content that addresses such keywords.

We go “Beyond Traditional” approach when tackling financial niche as well. Our team looks at Reddit. We strive to find financial subreddits with the best engagement.

Our team scans these subreddits and finds questions that are interesting. We make a list of such questions and find relevant keywords from them.

But there’s a problem. If a keyword has a high search volume, it means several firms are already working on it for their websites.

As a beginner, you need to avoid competition as much as possible. We recommend targeting keywords with>500 SV for a start. This is what we showed you in our examples.

Tools You Should Use for These Keywords

Keywords are the most essential components of your website. You will create content on and around these keywords. The purpose of having keywords within the content is to help Google recognize (or ‘index’) the topic you are working with.

Finding these ‘right keywords’ requires years of experience. But if you don’t think you’ll be able to manage all that, there are tons of tools to help you.

We recommend Google Keyword Planner, SEMRUSH, and AHREFS for keyword research. These tools are quite affordable and are comparatively simple to use.

Still, we understand how these tedious jobs can be a hassle for professional accountants like you. In this case, you can rely on us at Microters. We will handle the trouble and get you all the keywords suitable for your website.

Cost? It’s definitely within your budget. Below you’ll find our

You Need to Get Your Website Up and Running!

You need a place for all the content, information, and contact information. Your website is where your clients will find these details for their business.

Let us put you at ease. No, you don’t need HTML and CSS knowledge to get your website up and running. It's simpler than you think.

You must first get a good domain name to get the job done. Our advice is to go for a domain name that’s brandable, easy to remember, and sounds catchy.

Sadly, several clients of ours don’t put enough effort into selecting a brandable domain name for their businesses. They fail to realize that changing a domain name or a company name is a hassle once they select a domain name or a company name.

This is why they need to select one that sticks!

People can always find good domain names once they brainstorm a bit. If you have the time and budget, go to BrandBucket or Brandpa to find a suitable domain name with a clean history and catchy pronunciation.

The next thing to do when planning out SEO for Accountants is to pair your domain with good hosting services. The hosting service should have consistent uptime, fast servers to serve data, and a good reputation among its users.

We suggest going for WPEngine if you have the budget and want WordPress to run your website. This is a “Managed Hosting Service.”

This means you have everything done for you. If you have skilled developers on hand, they can stage and test the website BEFORE it goes live with the company's separate space.

We recommend WPEngine because of its “Support Staff.” They know what they’re doing and can help you out of any hole you dig yourself into.

Even if your website gets hacked (let’s face it, accountants and financial websites DO get Dosed or Hacked a lot), they’ll fix it free of charge.

Once you have your domain and host, get the UI ready. It’s basically the design of your website. The good news is you can choose from thousands of themes.

As around 60% of the Google searches are made on mobile, you should also optimize your website for smaller screens. WP Astra has a great article on accounting firms.

They cross-checked and spoke about 11 themes with your website(s).

These themes are responsive and mobile-friendly. Performance optimization shouldn’t be a problem.

Once the theme is ready, you must include essential pages on your website. As an accountant, your website works as your digital business card. Apart from the apparent content that’ll be the soul of the website, you need to include the following:

    A Welcoming Homepage.
    Services Page.
About us (This introduces your team).
    Contact Information.
Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions of Your Firm.
A Portfolio Section Showcasing Clients You’ve Served with their Testimonials.
A Case Study Section detailing famous Assignments You Took and Completed.

Generally, SEO for accountants becomes easier if you code your website. Yes, designing the website, creating the UI, and settling on a good UX takes time.

Several firms hesitate after hearing about the development cost as well. Not our clients, though! Our dedicated team does all the heavy lifting for the website.

If you want an easier route, feel free to use CMS or website builders to manage your website. Such programs will make it easier for you to include all the necessary elements and manage the content. WordPress is a popular CMS or content management system that basically has it all.

You can opt for other website builders like Wix as well. But we recommend WordPress.

Our Approach to Technical SEO for Accountants

While having an attractive outlook for your website is important, it’s also crucial to ensure it is speedy, easy to navigate, and secure. In other words, getting the “Technical Aspect” right is the other half of the key.

Google always prioritizes fast and secure websites. To ensure your website’s loading speed, use plugins like WP Rocket or Hummingbird.

LightSpeed Cache is also a good alternative, provided your hosting company uses a compatible server. Several hosting providers these days have their own caching plugin (Cough… Cough… Siteground).

Be sure to choose one with image optimization and lazy-load capabilities.

In the meantime, Google Analytics is available as well. Having such plugins will help you keep an eye on your website’s performance.

The one thing to always keep in mind while creating a website is your aim is to make it easier for visitors to navigate. Keep everything simple and organized. Include concise yet clear descriptions of each of the categories and services.

Each blog post should have a meta description to make it convenient for Google to index and readers to understand which content is which.

Once you are done with it, your website should look something like this. This is one of the top accountant websites.

For your inspiration, you can also take a look into some more. Tristan CPAKinney and Associates, and Kanani CPA are some of our favorite accountant websites.

Take a look at how they organized the elements and content. Focus on creating something similar.

Set up your Google Search Console account when you finish creating the website. Google Search Console (GSC for short) will help you monitor and maintain your site’s position on Google’s search results.

The next step of technical SEO is optimizing the “Crawl” budget for Google.

Google jumps from website to website in search of updated and valuable content. This is called crawling and depends vastly on how you maintain your website.

To stay at the top of the search results, here are a few tricks to get Google to crawl the website you build.

    Update your sitemap regularly.
Correctly configure Robot.txt and its parameters.
Properly maintain a logical site structure. We recommend following Silo Structure
Request Google to crawl URL to fasten indexing. However, don’t overdo it.

We understand that it’s a lot to unpack. Though it all seems too overwhelming, you must get it all done. However, when these become too tedious for you, just let us know, and we will run your website while you crunch those essential numbers.

Write The Right Kind of Content

It’s finally time to get those keywords into use. You have to place them properly within the content you write. This way, Google will recognize the category of your article and will learn to redirect you when someone searches for relevant phrases.

But more than just mentioning the keywords in the content is required. You have to create helpful content with only the necessary information. In addition, the writing style must be easy to read for the target audience.

Accountants deal with tons of complicated and uncommon terms. You have to find your way around them or come up with simple definitions for this jargon. This is a great way of staying ahead as an accountant.

Before creating content, organize your keywords. Group similar keywords together. This is called “Keyword Clustering.” Do this, and you’ll notice a pattern.

Once you group certain keywords. Even 50 or 60 keywords can be put in 10 or so sets. Simply put, skilled writers can use the main keyword and related ones to write wholesome articles on a topic to best represent it.

Let’s take it individually and see which page you should do at the beginning.

First, write content that explains the core services your firm provides. Don’t be direct, though. These articles talk about different issues related to accounting.

Your primary target here is to help the readers and potential clients. Focus on addressing your clients’ queries and confusions.

Behind this primary goal, your secondary intention can be to indirectly inform your readers that you can handle your clients’ issues.

Did you notice how we say the secondary intention ‘can be’ to inform?

If this is your primary focus, or if you keep bringing such topics up, Google may not recognize you as a helpful website and flag your content as misleading. Instead, always focus on making the content useful.

It is recommended not to follow a strict outline while writing content. Instead, organize and arrange the information in a way that helps the reader navigate through the topic.

While writing content for your website, link previous content you have worked on. This is called internal linking. Similarly, create spaces to link different websites.

We call this backlinking (more on this later). However, you have to do it all naturally. This is why good writing skills go a long way in SEO.

Try to include relevant stats and numerical information to showcase your knowledge as an accountant. Keep tables and charts to strengthen your content.

In case you are wondering, there’s no limit to how much content you can write for your website. The more, the merrier. But don’t publish irrelevant and bogus content in an attempt to keep the content flowing.

Apart from well-written content, you should focus on delivering specific things on specific pages of your website. Let’s focus on the different styles that different pages on your website should have.

A well-written homepage: Your website's homepage should feel welcoming. Use relevant, popular keywords here, but don’t over elaborate. It’s wise to keep the content of the homepage clear and concise.
A “Calculator Page” might help: Search Engine queries often bring you prospects who want to know about their credit score or overall monetary performance. Depending on what type of accounting services you provide, you’ll do well to design a calculator on your website to help users get a basic grasp of the situation before they reach out to you.
Attractive sales pages: The target of SEO, keywords, and well-written content is simply to gradually bring your clients to the service page. This is where they will seal the deal. If you can’t make this page attractive or alluring enough, you may lose out on a lot.
Informative contact page: Have a page dedicated to all of your social media (LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter) and contact information (phone number, email address, office address). This will not only make it easier for your clients to reach you, but a well-documented contact page is also a great way of gaining the trust of potential clients. It shows that you won’t vanish in thin air.
Case Study Section: This is something unique you can do for your website. Certain blog posts will only discuss your company's experiences with past clients, how you handle numbers, and get everything done. Any funny or interesting anecdotes are a bonus. In these articles, include some keywords as well.

Make sure to go through each and every piece of content properly. A poorly written piece can get you into a lot of trouble.

In addition, don’t forget to include relevant images. Visual helps a lot. We recommend properly optimizing all the images on your site. Proper titles, alt tags, descriptions, and captions are a must. These help Google understand the images in context.

Did you notice the length of the paragraphs you were reading and the nature of the dictions? Did it help you to skim through?

You should do the same with your content. Keep the words simple and the paragraphs short. Don’t put an irrelevant break, though.

If possible, pair an existing relevant YouTube video with your content. Having your own YouTube channel with the same brand name helps. Make sure to publish daily or weekly videos that tackle interesting problems and solve them.

It’ll only make Google like your content more.

You should keep the contents coming as frequently as possible. If it seems too much trouble for you, then you can easily hire a copywriter to handle all your writing needs.

They will compose tailored content for your website. Though this will require some investment, it will eventually save your valuable time.

Get on to social media and Forums

People don’t talk about it enough, but after the recent HCU and Spam updates from Google, it’s mighty important to have a strong social media presence. Be it Facebook or YouTube, constant engagement with your audiences helps. If we were you, we’d have done the following things:

We’d advise you to get onto Facebook and create a group and a page. Publish website links to informative articles or case studies on your FB page. While you’re at it, make some video recordings. Use explainer videos and reels to educate your audiences about tough topics. Facebook groups are perfect for engaging with your existing clients.
When it comes to YouTube, the idea remains the same. You create videos, upload them onto your channel, answer user queries in comments, and that’s it. One additional thing you can do is host podcasts with industry leaders, financial advisers, and your own clients. This will give you some much-needed social proof and case study material to work with.
A big part of SEO for Accountants nowadays is commenting on forums and utilizing Reddit. Google has recently entered a deal with Reddit to showcase Reddit content more. Google treats Reddit as a forum for different topics. Our advice to clients would be to engage in different “Accounting-Related” subreddits, host and contribute to AMA sessions, publish engaging articles, and solve problems in threads with soft promotion of their services.

    Get Some Backlinks

We found tons of different websites while researching accountant firms. Most had great content and an attractive design. So now, the question is how to stay ahead of them!

You may think it’s not possible, but you are wrong. Yes, you have really difficult competition, but you can overcome all of it with simple backlinking.

As only 5% of all the websites have backlinks toward them, it’s a great opportunity to seize that first position in the search results.

When you link to another reputed website, Google understands that you put only accurate information in your content.

Similarly, when another reputed website (a website Google already likes) links to your content, Google immediately recognizes your content as “Valuable.”

Google thinks the reputed website only cited your article because it includes valuable information. You must put these into practice in your article but don’t overdo it.

Instead of linking 5 to 10 lower-grade websites, go for 1 or 2 above-average platforms.

Google adores websites with good DR and UR.

However, it’s important to remember that backlinking should be between websites with relevant, NOT SIMILAR, content. Similar content means that the website is your competitor. That’s not the place for you to go.

Our advice is to follow a few strategies to get other websites to “like” your content enough to link to you.

Firstly, choose a popular financial blog or a news outlet with good traffic. Then, conduct some studies, research, or work with case studies that are relevant to the content that financial blogs usually care about.

Once you have articles that fit their content, let them know about your findings, and they can naturally link you up on their website.

Apart from this, there are tons of other backlinking strategies for accountants. The most effective of them is simply conducting original research. Once your content has the data no one else does, everyone will naturally cite your article.

If you are wondering which topic to research, look through the existing content. If you look closely enough, you will surely find some things missing.

You may also notice some kind of data that many websites can use. This is the ‘missing link’ you should work on. Once you have found the missing link, the link originally was intended for.

After the content is ready, inform the original websites about your research and how citing it will help their content. If everything goes well, they’ll be inclined to cite your article, and you’ll get a backlink.

Tools like Respona, Pitchbox, and Buzzstream can help a lot with backlinking. They do come at a price. Fortunately, these tools are not that complicated to use.

However, if you can increase your budget just by a sliver, you can get everything done while you focus on your work. How? Simply let us know what kind of backlinking service you need, and we at Microters will get to it right away.

Leverage Google Local Search and Map Pack

More than 40% of all Google searches are about local information. This means targeting local clients is more beneficial. As you already know, the search volume of keywords like “accountants near me” is on the rise, so you should aim for this.

You can attract local clients by simply optimizing your online presence for these local searches. Potential clients generally prefer to have accountants near their location for valid reasons, so it’s definitely a wiser direction.

The first step is creating a Google Business Profile. The benefit of a Google Business Profile is that it puts you in the map pack, and it’s completely free. The map pack is basically Google's map-based result for local businesses. It literally puts you on the map.

The profile contains your location and all the other basic information your client may need. This includes active hours, past clients' feedback, pricing, etc.

Whenever someone searches with keywords like “accountants in my area” or “best accountants in (name of the city),” this list appears. So, your goal is to be on this list.

Creating the Google Business Profile is just step one.

Make sure to put all the details and some photos in the recommended way. Once the profile is ready, verify these details. The verification process can be through email, phone call, or video submission.

Setting up such a profile is really helpful for potential clients, as they can understand the entire business at a glance. In addition to helping with that, GBP puts you at the very top of the search results, increasing your chances of getting more traffic.

Apart from this Google Business Profile, you can also try to do something more to stay ahead. Getting listed on online directories is another way to have a strong local presence.
